Position/Role

Full Professor of Manufacturing and Production Systems at Politecnico di Milano. Visiting Professor at MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology). Chair of the Scientific Committee, MICS (Made in Italy Circular and Sustainable). Member of the Strategic Support Group to the European Commission MANUFUTURE. Board Member of MADE – Competence Center Industria 4.0.

Professional career

After graduating in Management Engineering from Politecnico di Milano (1996), she obtained a PhD in Manufacturing and Production Systems (2001). In the same year, she was a visiting post-PhD researcher at Pennsylvania State University (PSU), where she has continued to collaborate since then. She became Assistant Professor in 1999, Associate Professor in 2003, and Full Professor in 2014 at Politecnico di Milano.

In 2025, she was Visiting Professor at the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), where she taught the course on Additive Manufacturing during the Spring Semester.

Scientific results

Her main research interest lies in the development of “intelligent” and “autonomous” manufacturing processes, leveraging big data analysis (signals, images, videos) for advanced manufacturing. She has a special focus on additive manufacturing and 3D bioprinting.

She has coordinated several European and national projects on digital, smart, and circular manufacturing, and has collaborated with the European Space Agency, the Italian Space Agency, and leading international research groups, including MIT, Georgia Institute of Technology, Technical University of Munich (TUM), and Imperial College London.

Editorial work and publications

She serves as Senior Editor or Department Editor of several leading international journals in data science for industrial engineering (IISE Transactions, Informs Journal of Data Science, Journal of Quality Technology) and in additive manufacturing (Progress in Additive Manufacturing, Additive Manufacturing Letters).

She is the Chair of the Scientific Committee of the Next Generation EU project Made in Italy Circular and Sustainable and a member of the European Commission’s advisory group on future manufacturing research strategies.

She has co-authored over 200 scientific publications in her fields of research.
