Daniela Pantosti

Expert in earthquake geology, paleoseismology, active tectonics, and seismic hazard

Role

Research Director and Director of the Earthquake Unit at the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV)

Bio

After graduating in Geology from the University of Rome La Sapienza in 1985, she qualified as a geologist in 1986. She then worked at the Geological Survey of Italy; from 1987, she was a researcher at the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology in Rome, and in 2000, she assumed the position of Research Director. In 1991-1992 and 1997-1998, she was a visiting scientist at the United States Geological Service in Menlo Park , California. In 2013, she decided to reduce her research activities to join the INGV, holding positions of responsibility and internal management. From 2013 to 2016, she was director of the Rome 1 Seismology and Tectonophysics Section. She currently directs the Earthquake Unit, responsible for planning, developing, and monitoring research activities.

Daniela Pantosti's main research area is Earthquake Geology and Paleoseismology (the study of the geological record of past earthquakes, research activities that provide an important contribution to seismic hazard estimates). Thanks to the support of the INGV (Italian National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology), Daniela Pantosti has been able to introduce these disciplines to Italy. Pantosti has led national and international projects regarding the definition of seismic and tsunami hazard in Italy, the Mediterranean, California, Central and South America, and New Zealand.
