Bio

Ginestra Bianconi is Professor of Theoretical Physics and Applied Mathematics at Queen Mary, University of London. After graduating in Physics from Sapienza University of Rome and earning her PhD from the University of Notre Dame, she carried out research at ICTP (Trieste) and in the United States before moving to London in 2013.

Her research explores the intersection of theoretical physics and applied mathematics, from statistical mechanics and network theory to gravity. She is known for the Bianconi-Barabási model, which links the evolution of complex networks to Bose-Einstein condensation, and for her contributions to the study of entropy and network ensembles. In recent years, she has focused on the role of topology and geometry in the dynamics of complex systems, with potential applications also to brain networks.

In 2025 he proposed Gravity from Entropy, a theory that interprets gravity through tools from statistical mechanics and information theory, which is now the focus of his research.

She is the Chief Editor of JPhys Complexity, a member of the European Academy of Sciences, and the author of books on multilayer networks and higher-order networks. Her awards include the Euler Prize, the APS Fellowship, the Network Science Fellowship, and the 2023 Franqui Chair.
