Role
Group Leader, Centre for Advanced Laser Technologies and Applications, STFC Rutherford Appleton Laboratory, UK.
Bio
Mariastefania De Vido earned a master's degree with honors in Engineering Physics from the Polytechnic University of Milan in 2013. In the same year, she joined the STFC Rutherford Appleton Laboratory in the United Kingdom as a researcher, where she focuses on the development of high-energy laser systems. She now heads the Centre for Advanced Laser Technologies and Applications group.
In 2018, he received a prestigious fellowship from the Royal Commission for the Exhibition of 1851 for research into the development of DiPOLE laser systems. Between 2016 and 2020, he completed his doctorate at Heriot-Watt University, receiving the prize for best thesis for his solutions to increase the energy and repetition rate of solid-state laser amplifiers. He also earned an MBA from Edinburgh Business School.
Since 2021, he has served as Technical Leader for the development of next-generation 100 Hz laser sources, achieving the world's first demonstration of stable operation of a high-energy laser at this repetition rate. Since 2019, he has lectured at the University of York on technologies applied to thermonuclear fusion and is a member of the steering committee for the PhD in Applied Photonics at Scottish universities.
His research focuses on high-energy, high-average-power solid-state laser systems, with applications in the aerospace and biomedical sectors, as well as in the development of inertial confinement nuclear fusion and next-generation laser-based particle accelerators.
