Antonella Ferrara

Expert in vehicle traffic modeling and control, sustainable mobility, and intelligent robotics

Role

Full Professor of Automatic Control at the University of Pavia; Founder and Director of the Intelligent Robotics Laboratory.

Bio

She earned a degree in Electronic Engineering in 1987 and a PhD in Electronic Engineering and Computer Science in 1992 from the University of Genoa. She became a researcher at the same university in April 1992, then moved to the University of Pavia as an associate professor in November 1998 and, since January 2005, has been a full professor of Automatic Control.

At the University of Pavia, he founded the Intelligent Robotics Laboratory of the Department of Industrial and Information Engineering, which he still directs. His scientific work focuses on nonlinear control and its applications to road traffic management, automotive systems, advanced robotics, and energy networks.

His research focuses on the optimization of complex systems, including vehicle networks, traffic, and energy networks, including those based on renewable resources. He has proposed algorithms for plants and processes with uncertain models and methods for traffic control , with the aim of reducing congestion and environmental impact.

She has designed solutions for driver assistance and autonomous driving systems, collaborating with major international automotive manufacturers and coordinating Italian research groups in multiple European projects. Her scientific output includes over 500 publications, including more than 180 articles in international journals, two monographs, and two collections of chapters for which she served as editor; her theoretical contributions have earned her a Fellowship from the prestigious international organizations IEEE and IFAC. She is also a member of the European Academy of Sciences (EurASc) and a Fellow of the International Academy of Artificial Intelligence Sciences (AAIS).
