Susanna Cotecchia

Expert in molecular pharmacology, and G-protein coupled receptors

Role

Retired Professor (formerly Full Professor of Pharmacology at the University of Bari Aldo Moro)

Bio

After graduating in Medicine and Surgery from the University of Bari in 1979, she specialized in neurology there. She then received a fellowship from the Mario Negri Institute in Milan and, in 1984, moved to Duke University Medical Center in the United States as a researcher in the group of Dr. RJ Lefkowitz, winner of the 2012 Nobel Prize in Chemistry.

Her academic career continued as a Research Assistant Professor at Duke University and, from 1992 to 2006, as a full professor of pharmacology at the University of Lausanne, Switzerland. In 2007, she returned to Italy and was appointed to the chair of Pharmacology at the University of Bari "Aldo Moro."

His basic research focuses on understanding disease mechanisms and drug action. His work focuses on G-protein-coupled membrane receptors, site-directed mutagenesis, and protein structure-function relationships, with the goal of clarifying the mechanisms of molecular pharmacology and promoting the development of more selective molecules.

Author of over one hundred scientific articles, she received the prize of the European Federation of Biochemical Societies (FEBS) in 1995, and the "Receptor Research Prize" from Perkin-Elmer Life Sciences in 2001.
