Bio

Chiara Giubilaro is Associate Professor of Geography at the Department of Humanities at the University of Palermo. Her research explores how images, practices, and policies produce inequalities, marginalization, and forms of resistance. She specializes in the geographies of migration in the Mediterranean, critical urban studies, popular geopolitics, and visual culture. She has studied media representations of migration, artistic practices of border protest, and processes of marginalization, regeneration, and touristification in Palermo's neighborhoods. She integrates qualitative and visual methods with participatory action research practices, collaborating with schools, associations, and local communities.

She holds a European PhD in Cultural Studies and has been a visiting researcher at Royal Holloway University of London, Heinrich-Heine-Universität Düsseldorf, and Aix-Marseille Université. She is vice-coordinator of the PhD program in Migration, Differences, and Social Justice at the University of Palermo and a member of the Steering Committee of the Commission “Research Methods in Geography” of the International Geographical Union. She is the author of the monographs Bodies, Spaces, Movements. For a Critical Geography of Dislocation (2016) and, with Stefania Crobe, of Beyond the Creative City.
